Welcome to Johnston County Public Schools IGNITE2018 Symposium!
We are excited to embark on this journey with you.  This year’s event is designed around 4 Quests.  Our hope is that if you follow a Quest over the 2 days your understanding will be deepened and you will find more relevance to your practice. There are 3 kinds of sessions: Connect (Edcamp style sessions) Learn (content delivery sessions) Innovate (implementation planning sessions).  Begin by selecting one of 4 Quest Options:
  • SBTL (Standards Based Teaching and Learning)
  • CORE (CORE Instruction)
  • Learner Agency
  • Learner Centered Practices
Here is a link to the Quest Cards that might be helpful in seeing the specific sessions by Quest.

To begin crafting your quest you will need to follow these steps.
  • Step 1: Select all your required sessions (filter by "All Quests" to see these options) - Opening, Lunch, Toolbox, Innovate and Closing Sessions
  • Step 2: Select your Learn sessions, please use the "filter by type" option on the right hand side to help you plan the remainder of your quest by topic.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: some options are in multiple quests - they are denoted on the quest cards, but to see those in sched you will need to use the filter that says "Multiple Quests."  Pick from those first, they will fill up fast.
  • Step 3:  In order to earn  the 1.5 Digital Learning Competencies,  your schedule should include 1 Connect, 5 Learn Sessions and 1 Innovate session (Note: you must also submit an artifact of implementation and a brief reflection after the symposium)

Have it Your Way... A Roadmap for Creating a Personalized Learning Environment (LCP and SBTL) FULL

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Description:  The purpose of this session is for participants to see the progression from unpacking their standard and determining what mastery looks like all the way to students showcasing their knowledge through digital portfolios.

This will be a working session where participants will walk away with a developed learner profile, pathway, and portfolio template.

The session will begin with participants establishing a learner profile that will help them develop a better understanding of their students. We will discuss “identity” and how knowing how a student identifies themselves can help us better meet their needs as a learner. Participants will complete a learner profile and identity web on themselves so they can see the benefit of having this information about students in order to develop a personalized learning environment.

Participants will then take one standard at their particular grade level and unpack that standard. A standard will be chosen that spirals through grade levels so they can see how the complexity of the standard changes.  Participants will chart this to show how the standard progresses through each grade level. They will then do a gallery walk to see and discuss the progression.

Taking the information from the learner profile, and the unpacked standard, participants will begin to develop a pathway that will help learners work their way from beginning to mastery. While looking at development, we will discuss different template options as well as digital tools for creating pathways.

Finally, participants will look at options for student created digital portfolios. Participants will discuss the importance of reflection. They will learn ways to help students track their data as well as options for documenting their learning journey. We will look at using Google Sites for this documentation.

By the end of the session, participants will feel more knowledgeable about tools they can use and the steps to take to create a more personalized learning environment for their students.

Rationale: In this session, participants will learn how to develop a personalized learning environment for their students using learner profiles, pathways, and digital portfolios. Participants will learn how to create learner profiles and use the learner profiles to create pathways. They will learn how to unpack a standard in order to determine the complexity of the standard as well as how to determine mastery. This will help them in the development of their standards based pathway. Participants will then explore ways in which students can document their mastery of standards through digital portfolios.
