Welcome to Johnston County Public Schools IGNITE2018 Symposium!
We are excited to embark on this journey with you.  This year’s event is designed around 4 Quests.  Our hope is that if you follow a Quest over the 2 days your understanding will be deepened and you will find more relevance to your practice. There are 3 kinds of sessions: Connect (Edcamp style sessions) Learn (content delivery sessions) Innovate (implementation planning sessions).  Begin by selecting one of 4 Quest Options:
  • SBTL (Standards Based Teaching and Learning)
  • CORE (CORE Instruction)
  • Learner Agency
  • Learner Centered Practices
Here is a link to the Quest Cards that might be helpful in seeing the specific sessions by Quest.

To begin crafting your quest you will need to follow these steps.
  • Step 1: Select all your required sessions (filter by "All Quests" to see these options) - Opening, Lunch, Toolbox, Innovate and Closing Sessions
  • Step 2: Select your Learn sessions, please use the "filter by type" option on the right hand side to help you plan the remainder of your quest by topic.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: some options are in multiple quests - they are denoted on the quest cards, but to see those in sched you will need to use the filter that says "Multiple Quests."  Pick from those first, they will fill up fast.
  • Step 3:  In order to earn  the 1.5 Digital Learning Competencies,  your schedule should include 1 Connect, 5 Learn Sessions and 1 Innovate session (Note: you must also submit an artifact of implementation and a brief reflection after the symposium)

Classroom to Living Room: Communicating with Guardians FILLING

Limited Capacity filling up

Description:Teachers want students to be more engaged in their classrooms, and one way to do this is to make them a part of the classroom community. I'd like to show teachers two options for inviting parents into their classrooms -- Google Classroom and See Saw. See Saw will improve parent involvement more than Google Classroom, but I'd like to provide two options because so many teachers are already using GC. I want to show them how to lead professionally by using technology as a means to engage. Teachers struggle with communicating with parents via phone calls, emails, etc. I'd like to show them a variety of emails (that I'll create) and have teachers "rank" them according to how professional and acceptable they are. In essence, this will be a lesson on tone. I'd also like teachers to role play and have mock conversations with one teacher pretending to be the teacher and the other teacher pretending to be a parent. I'll give them cards that let them know whether they are a parent who's upset over a grade, a text, etc. By collaborating with parents, teachers can improve their relationships with the guardians, students, and administrators.

Rationale:Teachers will be able to:
More effectively communicate with parents to cultivate their relationships with guardians and students. Engage parents by including them inviting them into the curriculum via Google Classroom.  Demonstrate global awareness through engaging with other cultures via advanced communication and collaboration tools. Provide opportunities for whole child development by fostering collaboration and communication with stakeholders.
