Welcome to Johnston County Public Schools IGNITE2018 Symposium!
We are excited to embark on this journey with you.  This year’s event is designed around 4 Quests.  Our hope is that if you follow a Quest over the 2 days your understanding will be deepened and you will find more relevance to your practice. There are 3 kinds of sessions: Connect (Edcamp style sessions) Learn (content delivery sessions) Innovate (implementation planning sessions).  Begin by selecting one of 4 Quest Options:
  • SBTL (Standards Based Teaching and Learning)
  • CORE (CORE Instruction)
  • Learner Agency
  • Learner Centered Practices
Here is a link to the Quest Cards that might be helpful in seeing the specific sessions by Quest.

To begin crafting your quest you will need to follow these steps.
  • Step 1: Select all your required sessions (filter by "All Quests" to see these options) - Opening, Lunch, Toolbox, Innovate and Closing Sessions
  • Step 2: Select your Learn sessions, please use the "filter by type" option on the right hand side to help you plan the remainder of your quest by topic.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: some options are in multiple quests - they are denoted on the quest cards, but to see those in sched you will need to use the filter that says "Multiple Quests."  Pick from those first, they will fill up fast.
  • Step 3:  In order to earn  the 1.5 Digital Learning Competencies,  your schedule should include 1 Connect, 5 Learn Sessions and 1 Innovate session (Note: you must also submit an artifact of implementation and a brief reflection after the symposium)

Exploring Students' Passions in the Classroom FILLING

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Limited Capacity filling up

Description:  As a 3rd grade classroom teacher and technology facilitator, we have collaborated all year with the students in my class to allow them to explore their passions and be creative in how they demonstrate to an authentic audience what they discovered about the essential question derived from their passion.Participants will be taken through the journey of passion projects from the brainstorming phase all the way through to the reflection phase. We will share some of the stumbling blocks and growing pains we’ve had to overcome. Participants will learn how to work through the passion project design and the importance of an essential question using our Passion Project Design template. Participants will practice evaluating essential questions and how they might need to be modified using our Essential Questions Worksheet. This makes the difference between a research project and a passion project. Willing participants will “field test” their work within groups.
Student samples of essential questions and student projects will be shared. The Scoring rubric that students use to evaluate their project as a part of their reflection will be shared with participants. We will elaborate on how we discuss with students the importance of practicing good Digital Citizenship, utilizing Copyright Laws, Fair Use and the dangers of plagiarism.
Participants will discover how we’ve been able incorporate passion projects into the curriculum and embed standards that we need to cover. They will be given the opportunity to brainstorm with like grade levels to see where passion projects will fit into their curriculum and standards. The resources used during this session will be shared with the participants to use in their classrooms.

Rationale:  Teachers will become knowledgeable about giving students more authentic personalized options through the implementation of passion projects in their classrooms. We plan to do this by sharing how we started implementing passion projects throughout this school year. Teachers will be given resources that we’ve utilized and/or created. Teachers will be given time to develop a personal passion project plan where they develop their essential question so that they may utilize it as a model to assist with the implementation of passion projects within their classrooms.
